Getting Started

A 16-track multi-engine performance groovebox with step sequencing, parameter locks, and a browser-based sample-manager and sound design interface.
Plug in power and play — no computer required.

This section is your on-ramp. It walks you through unboxing, your first beat, the core concepts, and the navigation model — in that order.

This manual documents the Groovebox app that ships on the tbd 16. The device can also run other apps (MegaCommand Live, Multi Effect/Synth) — see Apps and the tbd platform section.

Key concepts

Tracks

The tbd 16 has 16 tracks. Each track has its own sound, mixer channel (level, pan, effect sends), and step sequence. The active track number is always shown in the top-left corner of most screens.

Patterns

Each track has 6 pattern slots, each up to 64 steps long. Tracks can independently play different patterns and use different lengths, letting you build complex, evolving grooves.

Pages

Most parameter screens have multiple pages, navigated with the ↑/↓ arrows. Page dots at the bottom of the screen show your position. The number and names of pages depend on the active sound.

Step buttons

The 16 backlit step buttons change function based on what’s on the screen:

  • Sound screen — hold a step to edit per-step parameter locks; press while recording to toggle steps
  • Pattern screen — toggle track mute on/off
  • Overlay screens — shortcuts to tracks, mixer channels, and other screens

Modifiers

  • Shift — changes button behaviour (e.g. SHIFT + FUNC3 opens the Sound Preset browser)
  • Hyper — fine-tune mode for knobs (±1 per click) and extended functions

Where to go next

When you know the basics, continue with Sequencer, Sound & Tracks, and Mixer & Effects.
